'Red only' feeder

Design - This metal 'red only' feeder relies upon the weight difference between adult red and grey squirrels. The squirrel crosses a see-saw before it can get to the the food. The see-saw floor will hold the weight of an adult red squirrel but not the larger adult grey which gets tipped out!

Advantages - Helps reds as it excludes some grey squirrels (not juveniles). This might help the reds in places where both are found. Also, the metal is stainless steel and doesn't rust.

Disadvantages - This is the most expensive of the feeders. It is also large and can be difficult to clean. The magnets may require some fine-tuning to ensure that the floor tips at the correct weight. This can be done by moving the magnet forwards or backwards or by altering the position of the counterweights.

How should the feeder be maintained?
Check the feeder regularly to ensure that it is in full working order. The 'Red-only' feeders will need to be checked to make sure that lodged food does not stop the trap door from working. The magnet will need occasional oiling along with the points where the pivot touches the tunnel sides to ensure smooth movement of the floor. If the feeder is not in use, it should be taken down, cleaned and stored in a dry place.
